I read this magazine about 12 years ago and it was very cute and informative. It is certainly not for girls older than 12 or 13, but for a girl who wants a first magazine or is not yet ready for the shallow reads like Seventeen ("lyke omgggggg boizzzz").

Howard Hawks had the inspired notion of making Hildy Johnson--the ace newsman whom demonic editor Walter Burns is trying to keep from quitting and getting married--a she instead of a he. What's more, she's not only Walter's star reporter but also his ex-wife. When Hildy (Rosalind Russell) comes to tell Walter (Cary Grant) she's leaving the newspaper business, he bamboozles her into carrying out one last assignment--a death-row interview with a little nebbish (John Qualen) convicted of killing a policeman. It sounds like a snap, but before you can say screwball comedy, the press room of the Criminal Courts Building has become ground zero for all the lunacy a jailbreak, a shooting, an impromptu suicide, a corrupt city administration, and the most Machiavellian "hero" in the American cinema can supply.
His Girl Friday is one of the, oh, five greatest dialogue comedies ever made; Hawks had his cast play it at breakneck speed, and audiences hyperventilate trying to finish with one laugh so they can do justice to the four that have accumulated in the meantime. Russell, not Hawks's first choice to play Hildy, is triumphant in the part, holding her own as "one of the guys" and creating an enduring feminist icon. Grant is a force of nature, giving a performance of such concentrated frenzy and diamond brilliance that you owe it to yourself to devote at least one viewing of the movie to watching him alone. But then you have to go back (lucky you) and watch it again for the sake of the press-room gang--Roscoe Karns, Porter Hall, Cliff Edwards, Regis Toomey, Frank Jenks, and others--the kind of ensemble work that gets character actors onto Parnassus. --Richard T. Even as I worked on this project I didn't know if it was real or not. But if you ask me about it, I will deny it all... When the gods sent down the most beautiful goddess in the heavens to tempt his mortal soul the accounts read, "He almost wavered, but then he wavered not". Me? Thailand is a place where not only are the footsteps of the Buddha still echoing in the sands of time, but where the women are free and the men don't mind paying the price. This film will not appeal to everyone. You may need at least a passing interest in the subject matter to enjoy it. I found the DVD to be an insightful and interesting look at the relationship between Thai women and Western males.
There are abundant images of Thai beauties and the vibrant nightlife, filmed mainly in Bangkok. The film goes deeper however and gives the viewer insight into the buddhist views and approach to life typical of Thais. I found these views refreshing and share much of the filmakers philosophy on life and love.
Highly recommended and thoroughly enjoyable!

Menstruation education film for young teenage girls, redolent with dated detail. This is the companion film to "As Boys Grow," both written and produced by DM Hatfield. And it's quite clear, from his point of view, that girls end up with the short end of the stick. This film's seriousness about menstuation makes "As Boys Grow" seem light-hearted and cavalier by comparison. This film is such a downer! The boys literally get the "have fun, go ahead and masturbate!" message where girls get the "don't go square dancing!" message. A very dated film. This book is truly amazing because it answers so many questions we have always been asking through life... questions like why men are more aggressive, why some people change sex, and why some girls behave like boys and vice-versa.
In a sense, this book is like a college reference book (after all, I picked it up at my college library) but it reads like a bestseller! I couldn't stop reading after starting on it. It has a great chronological order of how boys and girls develop into their roles, and it touches on the biological side as well.
One thing I greatly admire about this book is that you don't need to have a major in Biology to understand what it is about. There are many techinal aspects of course, but the author made it easy to understand. In addition, her views are often supported by evidence and she also counteract her views with other arguments. In the end, the product is a well-balanced book, with unbiased views and sometimes, even more unanswered questions that will always be in our minds....trying to understand why boys grow up to be boys and why girls grow up to be girls.

A friend gave us her back issues of this magazine. It is full of fun, ideas, and experiments. I like the idea of no advertisements. I like that there's no agenda of trying to make little girls grow up too fast (no make-up, hair styles, fashion, etc.). Not sure if they still do this, but there's a section where you can get a pen pal through the magazine. Several letters were from home schooled kids. I wouldn't down-grade product that tells you in the description that it takes 12-16 weeks to arrive. It does sound like a long time, but it was disclosed upon ordering.

Probably conceived as a sexier version of American Graffiti, this film seems to have been a modest success when videotape made it more generally available. It stars Debra Winger and a few other people you may recognize. Typical of its genre, it consists of a string of sexy vignettes involving a lot of tease and some nudity. It rises above its competition when one of the girls gets a bare-bottom spanking from her father (always a welcome break in movies about adolescent foibles), and a flimsy-underwear pool party. Ms. Winger's talents are largely wasted here, as she gets one of the least interesting stories. Still, it's an amusing romp with generally good production values.
Oddly, the numerous sexy films of the era (i.e. the ones with no pretense to actual hardcore), mostly comedies, seem to have made it to DVD from the extremes: the higher quality ones (Felicity, Eugenie, Radley Metzger's films) and the lowest quality ones (so-called drive-in films, though usually shown in cheap, inner-city theaters (50 cent triple-bills!)). The mid-range films, low budget but with competent acting and decent quality, seem to have fallen by the digital wayside. How To Succeed With Sex (with its acre of naked coeds running in slow motion) and Hollywood High (not the sequel), and a hundred like them, have disappeared. A pity.

This is a great book for girls on the younger end of puberty. It tells them everything they need to know about how their bodies are changing but doesn't go into the talk about sex that most girls this age aren't ready for. I like that it treats the information in a straight-forward manner and presents potentially embarrassing elements as no big deal.
What I like about this book compared to the American Girls book, is that this book also talks about the social aspects of growing up--bullies, changing relationships, friends, that kind of thing. It does mention boys, but only as friends and--someday--boyfriends.
Overall, I would highly recommend this for the (mature) 8-year-old to the average 14-year-old. Another nice aspect of this book are the quotes from the real girls. They can go a long way toward helping a tween realize she isn't alone in all this puberty stuff.
